Circle of the Lost

The strangest members of the druidic order, Circle of the Lost druids, or Lost Druids, find that many other druids no longer consider them kin. The Lost Druids come from lands that have been maliciously destroyed – forests burned to the ground, swamps drained, mountains ruined by mining, and so on. Rather than try to rebuild or move on, a Lost Druid allows their heart to darken from brooding on the devastation and embraces dark magic to seek revenge.

Lost druids always feel bitter, and because of this they sometimes go insane, their hearts filled with an insatiable, often impossible, desire for vengeance against those who destroyed their land.

Table: Circle of the Lost Spells
Cleric Level Spells
3rd gentle repose, ray of enfeeblement
5th animate dead, speak with dead
9th danse macabre, enervation
7th death ward, shadow of moil

Necromantic Magic

2nd-level Circle of the Lost feature

Your connection to death and undeath grants you access to necromantic magic. You learn the spare the dying and toll the dead cantrips. They count as druid cantrips for you, but they don’t count against your number of cantrips known.

Additionally, at 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th level you gain access to additional necromantic spells. Once you gain access to these additional spells, you always have them prepared, and they don’t count against the number of spells you can prepare each day. If you gain access to a spell that doesn’t appear on the druid spell list, the spell is nonetheless a druid spell for you.

Undead Wild Shape

6th-level Circle of the Lost feature

When you use your wild shape ability, you may choose to give the form you assume some of the characteristics of certain undead creatures.

When you transform into a beast at 6th level and beyond, you gain the Undead Fortitude ability of a zombie. As you progress in this druid circle, the abilities of other undead creatures become available.

When you use your wild shape ability, you may choose to give the form you assume some of the characteristics of certain undead creatures.

When you transform into a beast at 6th level and beyond, you gain the Undead Fortitude ability of a zombie. As you progress in this druid circle, the abilities of other undead creatures become available, ghast at 11th level and wight at 17th level. You may only choose a single undead characteristic to apply during your transformation. When you transform in this manner, the type of the beast changes to undead and you are subject to any effect that affects undead in this form.

Zombie (Undead Fortitude). If damage reduces your form to 0 hit points, you may make a Constitution saving throw with a DC of 5 + the damage taken, unless the damage is radiant or from a critical hit. On a success, you drop to 1 hit point instead.

Ghast (Stench). Any creature that starts its turn within 5 feet of you must succeed on a Constitution saving throw against a DC equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier or be poisoned until the start of its next turn. On a successful saving throw, the creature is immune to your stench for 24 hours.

Wight (Drain Life). When you make a successful melee attack, the target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw against a DC equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier or its hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the damage taken. This reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. The target dies if this effect reduces its hit point maximum to 0.

Undead Animal Thralls

6th-level Circle of the Lost feature

When you cast animate dead on creatures that have the beast type, you can target one additional corpse or pile of bones, creating another zombie or skeleton, as appropriate.

Whenever you create an undead from a creature that has the beast type using a necromancy spell, it has additional benefits:

  • The creature’s hit point maximum is increased by an amount equal to your druid level.
  • The creature adds your proficiency bonus to its weapon damage rolls.

Turn Undead Animals

10th-level Circle of the Lost feature

You gain the ability to rebuke dead animals. This ability functions identical to the cleric’s Channel Divinity: Turn Undead ability except that it can only be used to rebuke undead that formerly possessed the Beast type before becoming undead. Any undead under your control are immune to this effect.

Undying Body

14th-level Circle of the Lost feature

Your familiarity with death and undeath has granted you certain benefits of undead creatures. You are immune to being frightened or poisoned, and you are immune to poison and necrotic damage as well as diseases. However, you are now vulnerable to radiant damage.
