Origins vs. Backgrounds

The origin described below applies to characters in modern, super-heroic settings.

Deviants are the result of a variety of different events. While the Rise is responsible for bringing deviants to the forefront, there are a multitude of other reasons why people gained these powers.

This takes on the form of The Rise speeding up evolution in some, changing and mutating a creature on a molecular level, or supercharging someone during an accident that would otherwise be a mundane issue. Because of this, they come from a multitude of different origins. Some may gain the powers from being bitten by a radioactive insect, their keen intellect and wealth may allow them to create powerful suits of armor, or they are the result of laboratory experiments to create the ultimate soldier. The origins of heroes are nearly endless. Thus, it makes for an opportunity to build on your character’s story and powers.

It’s important to note that while the origin of your character’s powers grants them extraordinary gifts, it’s not the only thing that defines them.

Genius

Humans are an amazingly versatile and progressive species. They set out to do what seems impossible regardless of any roadblocks or limitations they may come up against.

Starting with the creation of the wheel, to aircraft, robotics, artificial intelligence, and more, humans strive to reach for the stars and create ever impressive technological marvels.

There are some that rise above the rest due to their superior wit, reason, and general braininess. While not gifted with supernatural powers of their own, evolution’s genetic lottery has instead bestowed upon them the power of intellect. Masters of; strategic planning, deducing probable outcomes, and constructing unique solutions, their keen minds allow them to craft powerful tools and rapidly assess situations in order to help them in their fight for justice.

Geniuses come from all backgrounds and walks of life; therefore, it is difficult to distinguish them from another ordinary person until they begin using words and terms that are nigh-incomprehensible to the average individual.

Genius Traits

While Geniuses widely vary across the spectrum of human backgrounds and experiences, they all share a commonality in their keen intellect.

There are some who utilize their intellect proactively to create toolkits or tool belts to plan for every potentially hazardous circumstance and occasion. Others have gone to the lengths of creating unique artificial intelligence, robotics, and other mechanical enhancements in their quests for justice. Yet others utilize their strong memorization skills to retain key information on physical locations, blueprints, patterns, and other relevant factors that could influence a mission for tactical eye-in-the-sky prowess. Not only do they already maintain a wide berth of intellectual expertise, but they also possess a much greater aptitude for learning, adapting, and persevering. Things like learning a new language that are difficult for your everyday person are a fun interest of the month that they will come out experts in. With as much information as they retain, it’s no wonder they’re easily clocked as Geniuses as soon as they begin to speak.

Skill Versatility. You gain proficiency in four skills or tools of your choice. Then, choose one of the skills or tools to become an expert in. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses that skill.
