Spellborn

From the moment of your birth and throughout your childhood, everyone around you recognized your unusual nature. Strange, unpredictable events occurred in your wake. It didn’t take long before people began to view you as touched, marked, or cursed by some unknown power.

Not long thereafter, you learned about your innate magic, either through accident or thanks to the guidance of a concerned mentor.

Discovery of Magic

Under what circumstances did you discover your innate magical talents? Roll on the table below or create your own event and discuss the ramifications and story hooks with your GM.

d8 Discovery of Magic
1 A moment of stress, anxiety, or intense fear led you to casting your first spell
2 You experienced a strange dream, only to wake up and discover you’d use magic in your sleep
3 A long-lost relative taught you how to access the magic dormant within your soul
4 You stumbled across mention of your name and your magical talent in a dusty old tome
5 A conversation overheard revealed the existence of your magical gifts
6 A shadowy form appeared at your side and whispered the truth of your nature
7 A group of cultists attempted to kidnap you, believing you to be the fulfillment of ancient prophecy
8 Upon reaching a certain age, your parents or guardian revealed the family secret about the magic they each possess

Feature: Mysterious Reputation

Whether you wish it or not, word about your magical talents has spread far across the land. People have learned to recognize you, and this recognition brings with it equal measures of respect and fear or loathing.

You can take advantage of your reputation to convince people to overlook small crimes or peculiar actions, especially those not witnessed by local authorities. You can also use your reputation to gain an audience with those interested in magic such as scholars and spellcasters, although they tend to look upon you as a nothing more than a curiosity (albeit a dangerous one, perhaps).
