SPECIAL TRAITS

  • Astral Camouflage. On the Astral Plane, an astral devourer has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks and Wisdom (Perception) checks to observe it have disadvantage.
  • Chilled Slow. If the astral devourer takes cold damage, its speed is reduced by half until the start of its next turn.
  • Detect Bag of Devouring. Anyone entering the Astral Plane in possession of a bag of devouring will attract the astral devourer who made it within 1d4 hours. Destroying a bag of devouring does no harm to the astral devourer, except to cause the nucleus to start manufacturing another bag, which will be completed in one week. An astral devourer may have only one such bag at any time.

ACTIONS

  • Multiattack. An astral devourer makes four attacks with its tentacles.
  • Tentacles. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d6 + 2) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 15). Until the grapple ends, the target is restrained and has disadvantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws, and the astral devourer can’t use the same attack on another target.
  • Absorb. The astral devourer makes an opposed Strength (Athletics) check against a Medium or smaller target it is grappling. If the astral devourer wins, the target is also absorbed, and the grapple ends. While absorbed, the target is blinded and restrained, it has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the astral devourer, and it takes 13 (3d8) acid damage at the start of each of the astral devourer’s turns. The astral devourer can have only one creature swallowed at a time. If the creature takes 20 damage or more on a single turn from the swallowed creature, the astral devourer must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate the creature, which falls prone in a space within 10 feet of the astral devourer. A creature reduced to 0 hit points dies and its body is disintegrated if it fails a death saving throw while grappled by the astral devourer. If the astral devourer dies, a swallowed creature is no longer restrained by it and can escape from the remains by using 15 feet of movement, exiting prone.

ABOUT

An astral devourer appears is a large amoeba-like creature with a translucent silvery body that is native to the Astral Plane. It is difficult to detect in its native environment and hunts by stealth, rarely venturing out of its home plane. It has a semisolid nucleus containing its brain and other organelles, while its surface is smooth and glistening, able to form long tendrils to grasp its prey.

As natives of the plane, they experience hunger in a way that travelers in their astral bodies do not, but it is not content to simply graze upon whatever victims come within its reach, as it can reach between planes to find new sources of nourishment, growing until it eventually reproduces by fission, with each devourer going its own separate way after splitting.

Bag of Devouring. Being native to the Astral Plane, astral devourer experience normal feelings of hunger (unlike visitors from other planes) and have developed special talents for getting their food. It can form a stomach sac with a volume of 30 cubic feet and can extend it on the Astral Plane or extend it through a transplanar link into other realms, where only the end of this extruded organ is visible, resembling a pliable leather or cloth bag that radiates magic. Curious creatures discovering them and noticing their strangely capacious interior space (due to the devourer’s transplanar nature) often mistake them for a bag of holding, or even a bag of tricks or bag of beans if a creature discovers the soft micro-organs within the sac. Their error is soon apparent, however, as once the devourer becomes hungry its extruded sac functions as a bag of devouring. Destroying the bag of devouring does not harm the astral devourer, but it cannot create another one until it completes a long rest.

Interdimensional Treasure. While an astral devourer eventually consumes what is placed in it utterly, this destruction is not immediate, and items some unsuspecting adventurer on the Material Plane may have stashed within what they believed to be a bag of holding may remain intact. When slain, if the devourer’s remains are closely examined within 1 minute, various treasures may be discovered within its stomach that have not yet been destroyed. Roll percentile dice and consult the following table.

After each minute that passes, there is a 10% chance (check each minute) that any treasures are disintegrated.

d% Result
01-30 No treasure
31-40 2d6 x 100 sp 41-60 1d4 x 100 gp
61-80 1d4 gems or jewelry 81-90 1d2 small-sized common, uncommon, or rare magic items (equal chance of each)
91-00 Roll twice and combine with any previous result
