SPECIAL TRAITS

  • Exploit Pain. The joyful thing has advantage on attack rolls against targets that are frightened or that doesn’t have all its hit points.
  • Innate Spellcasting: The joyful thing’s innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 14). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
  • Magic Resistance. The joyful thing has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
  • Pain Resistance. The joyful thing has advantage on saving throws against being exhaustion and being poisoned.

ACTIONS

  • Multiattack. The joyful thing makes two spiked chain attacks.
  • Spiked Chain. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (2d4 +3) piercing damage and the target is grappled (escape DC 16).
  • Scare (Recharge 5-6). One creature of the joyful thing’s choice within 30 feet of it must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 minute. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, with disadvantage if the joyful thing is within line of sight, ending the effect on itself on a success.

ABOUT

The most dedicated sometimes undergo a brutal ritual in which their limbs are amputated and their nonvital organs are removed. This imbues the so-called Joyful Things with powers drawn from the Plane of Shadow but also makes them embodiments of pain, sacrifice, and the eternal torment that awaits in the afterlife. These exemplars of glorious suffering hold positions of influence, and any temple that hosts one or more Joyful Things is considered blessed by the gods of darkness.
