SPECIAL TRAITS

  • Cold Aura. At the start of each of the cailleach’s turns, each creature within 10 feet of her takes 10 (3d6) cold damage. A creature that touches the cailleach or hits her with a melee attack while within 10 feet of her also takes this damage.
  • Fey Ancestry. The fey has advantage on saving throws against being charmed and can’t be put to sleep magically.
  • Ice Walk. The cailleach can move across and climb icy surfaces without needing to make an ability check, and difficult terrain composed of ice or snow doesn’t cost the hag extra moment.
  • Innate Spellcasting. The cailleach’s spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 19). She can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
  • Magic Resistance. The cailleach has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
  • Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the cailleach fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.
  • Siege Monster. The cailleach deals double damage to objects and structures.

ACTIONS

  • Multiattack. The cailleach makes two attacks.
  • Thunder Hammer. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8 + 6) bludgeoning, or 17 (2d10 + 6) bludgeoning damage if used with two hands, plus 10 (3d6) thunder damage.
  • Frost Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d6 + 6) bludgeoning damage, or 15 (2d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage if wielded with two hands plus 10 (3d6) cold damage.
  • Children of the Wild (1/Day). The cailleach magically calls 3d6 deer or wolves. The called creatures arrive in 1d4 rounds, acting as allies of the cailleach and obeying its spoken commands. The beasts remain for 1 hour, until the cailleach dies, or until she dismisses them as a bonus action.

LEGENDARY ACTIONS

The cailleach can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time, and only at the end of another creature’s turn. The cailleach regains spent legendary actions at the start of her turn.

  • Ice Sheet. The cailleach slams her hammer into the ground, causing a 20-foot-radius area centered on her to become difficult terrain. The area becomes icy, and any creature that starts its turn there must succeed on a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw or fall prone.
  • Chilling Glare (Costs 2 Actions). The cailleach fixes her one eye on a creature she can see within 60 feet of her. The target must succeed on a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw or be paralyzed for 1 minute. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
  • Call of Winter (Costs 3 Actions). The cailleach can summon a powerful winter storm in a 60-foot radius centered on a point she can see within 120 feet of her. The storm lasts for 1 minute. Each creature in the area must make a DC 19 Constitution saving throw, taking 54 (12d8) cold damage and becoming blinded on a failed save or half as much damage and not blinded on a successful one. Additionally, the area becomes difficult terrain, and all flames are extinguished.

ABOUT

The cailleach appears as a veiled old woman with long, wild white hair and one eye in the center of her forehead. Her skin is pale or blue, and her teeth are red like rust. She wears a cloak adorned with skulls and carries a magical staff or hammer.

The cailleach (CAH-le-ATH) is a powerful fey creature associated with winter and the changing seasons. She is often associated with stormy weather and is said to control storms and thunder with her magical hammer. The Cailleach is known to reside in the highest peaks.

The Cailleach is a wild force of nature. Despite her association with destruction, she also cares for the land and its creatures. In some interpretations, she is a personification of winter, battling against the forces of spring. She herds deer and protects animals during the harsh winter months. Her hammer can shape the hills and valleys, and she uses her magic to control the weather and unleash storms. The Cailleach’s appearance as an old woman and her connection to aging and renewal symbolize the cyclical nature of the seasons.

As a powerful and unpredictable fey, encountering a cailleach can be both awe-inspiring and dangerous. She is not inherently good or evil, and her actions and intentions may vary depending on the circumstances and the whims of the seasons. Those who dare to cross her or challenge her authority may face the wrath of her frosty claws and the fury of her winter storms.
