Bag of Lightning Caltrops

Weapon (caltrops), rare (requires attunement by a fighter or rogue)

This storm-gray and lightning yellow leather bag holds a dozen +1 caltrops made of glowing black and yellow metal. They shed dim yellow light in a 5 foot radius.

Radiates: Conjuration and evocation magic.

Power: You may reach into this alchemist’s bag as an action and scatter a dozen +1 caltrops in a 10 x 10 foot area. The caltrops do 2 points of piercing damage and 1d4 point of lightning damage to any creature that enters the area unless it succeeds at a Dexterity save with a DC equal to 8 + your Dexterity modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature that fails its saving throw but leaves the area continues to take 1d4 lightning damage at the start of its turn for 2 additional rounds.

Any creature that begins its turn in the area takes 1d4 lightning damage for each turn it remains or until the duration ends. After 1 minute, the caltrops vanish and reform inside the bag. You may use this power once per short or long rest.

Special: Creatures in metal armor (or those made of metal) take 2d4 lightning damage from the caltrops.

Special: If the caltrops are dropped into standing water or any reasonably wet area (GM’s discretion), the lightning damage increases to 2d4, or 3d4 for creatures in metal armor (or made of metal).

Special: If you are a rogue, you may use this power as a bonus action instead of the Dash, Disengage, or Hide actions granted by Cunning Action.
