Dragon’s Eye Staff

Staff, legendary (requires attunement by a spellcaster)

The eye of this staff was removed from a red dragon and enchanted by a powerful elven wizard that imbued it with its magical properties.

This staff can be wielded as a magic quarterstaff that grants a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it.

While holding it, your Wisdom score increases by 2, as does your maximum for that score.

While holding the staff, you can use an action and expend a spell slot of 3rd-level or higher to point the eye of the staff at a creature within 60 feet of you that can see the eye and say the command phrase, “Go and observe.”

The target must make an Intelligence saving throw against your spell save DC. On a success, the effect fails and you can’t use this property of the staff again for one hour, but you regain the expended spell slot. On a failed save, the target is charmed by you for one hour per your character level, until it drops to 0 hit points, until you use a bonus action to dismiss the effect, or until you use the staff to charm a different creature. If you or creatures that are friendly to you are fighting it, it has advantage on the saving throw. Each time the charmed creature takes damage, it can repeat its saving throw against the effect, ending the effect on itself on a success.

If the creature’s saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to this effect of the staff for the next 24 hours.

While the target is charmed by you, you have a telepathic link with it as long as the two of you are on the same plane of existence. You can use this link to command the charmed creature to seek out and observe a creature or location that is familiar to you. You specify a location, which you must have visited, or describe a creature that you have seen, and the charmed creature travels for the duration of the effect towards the specified creature or location, covering about 50 miles per 24 hours for a flying creature, or 25 miles for others. If approaching the specified creature or location would result in certain death, the effect ends.

When the charmed creature arrives at its destination, it alerts you through your telepathic link and observes the specified creature or location at a safe distance. You can then use your telepathic link with the creature to issue commands related to its observation (no action required), which it does its best to obey. You can specify a simple and general course of action, such as “Stay out of sight,” “Run over there,” or “Approach that creature.” If the charmed creature completes the order and doesn’t receive further direction from you, it defends and preserves itself to the best of its ability.

In addition, while the creature is charmed by you, you can use an action to look into the back of the staff ’s eye and speak the command phrase “Let me see.” Doing so allows you to see through the charmed creature’s vision until the end of your turn. As long as the creature is on the same plane of existence as you, you can use your action on subsequent turns to maintain this connection, extending the duration until the end of your next turn. Additionally, by rotating in position with the staff close to your eye, the charmed creature’s field of view changes to match where you point the staff ’s eye.
