Entrenching Spade

Wondrous item, uncommon

This humble spade is an exceptionally effective digging tool, allowing you to excavate a 5-foot cube of earth, snow, sand, or similar material from your own square or an adjacent square as a standard action. If you are digging in your own square, you can continue digging the hole deeper, but you cannot dig a hole deeper than 5 feet in an adjacent square. Digging in a square occupied by another creature provokes an attack of opportunity from that creature.

In addition, the spade has 3 charges, and you may expend 1 charge as an action to move up to your base movement speed in a straight line, leaving behind a trench that is 5 feet deep and 5 feet wide in each square as you leave it. You cannot enter an occupied square while digging this trench. You cannot use this ability while mounted, climbing, or flying. The spade regains all expended charges daily at dawn.
