Orb of Purple Shadows

Wondrous item, unique (requires attunement by an arcane spellcaster of evil alignment)

This purple crystal ball is covered in sinister silver skulls and swirling spirits.

Radiates: Conjuration and necromancy magic.

  • When thrown, the orb unleashes a billowing stinking cloud of purple smoke up to 30 feet away. The cloud cannot be dispersed by nonmagical winds. Any creature caught in its radius must make a Constitution save against poison. Inside the smoke, 1d4 shadows are instantly summoned by the orb and proceed to attack anyone within the cloud. The shadows are bound to the cloud and can’t leave its radius. The cloud makes the shadows even harder to see, so they gain advantage on all attacks and a +4 armor class bonus. The smoke of the orb (and the shadows it summons) linger for a number of rounds equal to your proficiency bonus. This item can only be used once per day, and only when underground, in darkness, or in dim light.

Special: If you are a necromancer, the duration of the cloud and its shadows increases to a number of rounds equal to your arcane spellcaster levels + your proficiency bonus.

Curse. If you die while attuned to the orb, you rise as a wraith in 1d4 rounds; the only physical item you can still manipulate is the orb.
