Shadowstaff (Monte Cook Games)

Staff, artifact (requires attunement by a spellcaster)

This artifact is centuries old, weaved together from strands of pure shadow into a twisted staff of rigid but flexible material.

The staff automatically makes you slightly shadowy and incorporeal, granting you a +2 bonus on AC and saving throws. In bright light (such as sunlight) or in darkness, you gain disadvantage on attack rolls, saves, and checks.

The staff has ten charges. It regains 1d4 expended charges daily at dawn and dusk.

As your action, you can expend one or more charges and use one of the following abilities.

  • 1 charge(s)-Summon 2d4 shadows. These shadows have advantage on Wisdom saving throws against effects that turn undead. They understand and obey your commands, and remain for ten rounds.
  • 7 charge(s)-Summon an undead nightcrawler that understands and obeys your commands and remains for ten rounds. You can’t use this property again until thirty days have passed.
  • 1 charge(s)-Become a living shadow, with all of the effects of a gaseous form spell.
  • 2 charge(s)-Create a ray of cold energy that strikes one target within 100 feet. The ray uses your spell save DC. The target takes 10d6 cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
