Blankfolk

Blankfolk are found in two places, Blankenburg in Oz and the Valley of Voe in the underground. It’s believed blankfolk originated in Voe, where many of the creatures are invisible. This invisibility works on the blankfolk themselves; above ground, they are more visible than they would like but still know enough secrets to help them stay hidden. When not invisible, blankfolk look like regular humans.

Two different plants contribute to blankfolk’s powers. They are less powerful away from the Valley but still effective in helping blankfolk overcome any obstacle. The first is dama-fruit, which makes blankfolk invisible. Blankfolk have ingested so much dama-fruit that they can become invisible at will, although for a more limited time than in the Valley of Voe. The second fruit is the agua-plant, which allows one to walk on any liquid surface by rubbing it on the soles of one’s feet.

Blankfolk rely on their invisibility to avoid the voe bears that they share the valley with. Voe bears rely primarily on their sense of sight to catch the unwary, and the few animals who are foolish enough to not eat dama-fruit soon succumb to them. As such, voe bears are often very hungry and quite aggressive.

The blankfolk of Blankenburg tend to wear clothes when they are about town, an intentional affectation to show off their couture. They enslave tailors to make them new clothes, which are not invisible. Blankfolk find visible faces quite offensive and will not hesitate to throw interlopers down their well (a Fare-well).

The blankfolk of Blankenburg, newly settled citizens from Voe, found not being invisible all the time to be quite novel, but soon that novelty became an obsession. The blankfolk became vain and haughty and tried to outshine one another in appearance. They thought of nothing but dress and all of their time and money was spent for new and splendid apparel. As some of the inhabitants were handsomer than others there was always an argument as to who really looked the best. Vanette, the Queen, had smuggled some wild dama-fruit from Voe, and planted them by a pool. But the plants enchanted the pool itself, bestowing invisibility as if they were eaten. Realizing that the dama-fruit no longer needed to be parceled out, she hurried back to the palace, where she ordered her servants to carry a bucket of the magic water to everyone in the city. She then commanded them to bathe in the enchanted water and since then they have been perfectly invisible. Vanette is exceedingly jealous of anyone more attractive than she. She bathed in the water too and is now as invisible as the rest of her subjects. So now, when they dress up in their fine clothes, faces don’t count at all, and the Queen always wins all the beauty prizes. And that’s why it’s against the law to have a face in Blankenburg.
