Chessmen

Chessmen are beings native to a realm that resemble human-sized chess pieces. Brilliant tacticians, chess delight in manipulating the militaries and politics of other races. Though they appear to be constructs, they are flesh-and-blood beings.

Traits

Ability Score Increase. Two different ability scores of your choice increase by 1.

Age. All chessmen are ageless adults. They do not have children. The number of chess that currently exist is all there will be.

Alignment. Chessmen follow the bizarre laws and traditions that have evolved in their regions of Wonderland, but they try to advance their own agenda where possible. Chessmen are lawful neutral.

Rarity. Rare.

Size. Most chessmen stand over 6 feet tall and can be almost 7 feet tall, if counting their base. They are slender, weighing between 180 and 260 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Chess Movement. Select one of the following movement-related traits.

Pawn. You can take the Dash action as a bonus action on your first turn of combat.

Bishop. If all your movement is diagonal, you can move an extra 5 feet. If you use the Dash action, you can gain up to 10 feet of extra movement on your turn from this trait.

Knight. If you move at least 20 feet in a straight line and then the rest of your movement at a right angle to that path, you can move an extra 5 feet. If you use the Dash action, you can gain up to 10 feet of extra movement on your turn from this trait.

Rook. Once on your turn, you can spend 10 feet of movement to switch places with an ally.

Queen. You can take the Disengage action as a bonus action twice during any combat.

King. You can take the Dodge action as a bonus action once during any combat.

Inscrutable Mind. When an effect would force you to behave in a way you wouldn’t normally behave, you receive another saving throw against that effect. If the saving throw succeeds, the effect’s duration doesn’t change, but you behave normally rather than abnormally. You are immune to insanity and the feeblemind spell.

Training. You have proficiency in one skill, tool, or weapon.

Languages. You speak, read, and write Common.
