Elemental, Ice

Ice elementals are primordial beings naturally formed from the coalescence of magic and ice. They can keep their forms even in warm surroundings as long as the temperature is constant, but spikes in heat can cause them to melt. They can freeze whatever they touch. Ice elementals originate from the Waterscape, the elemental realm of water, but they can manifest on the Mortal Plane.


Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 2.

Age. Like fire elementals, ice elementals can achieve self-awareness and “adulthood” in three years or so. They do not age.

Alignment. Ice elementals are, like most elementals, focused on themselves and their desires. Although curious and slow to anger, they have little concern for morality. Most ice elementals are chaotic neutral.

Rarity. Rare.

Size. Despite outsized limbs, ice elementals are roughly humanlike in shape and size. Your size is Medium.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Harden Body. Once per day, you can harden the ice of your body for 1 hour. You gain 5 temporary hit points for the duration. If a creature hits you with a melee attack while you have these hit points, the creature takes 5 cold damage. You can expend a 2ndlevel or higher spell slot to increase the power of this trait. If you do so, you gain 5 more temporary hit points and deal 5 more cold damage for each level the slot is above 1st.

Icy Magic. You know the ray of frost cantrip. In addition to this spell’s normal use, you can use it to make a melee spell attack. Constitution or Wisdom (your choice) is your spellcasting ability for this spell.

Living Elemental (Ice). You are a humanoid, but your elemental nature gives you the following traits.

  • You are immune to disease, and you have resistance to cold and poison damage. Also, you can add your proficiency bonus to saving throws against cold and being poisoned. If you have proficiency in such a saving throw, your proficiency bonus is doubled for these purposes.
  • You are vulnerable to fire damage. However, you can add your proficiency bonus to any saving throw against fire. You do the same for any ability check or saving throw to extinguish fire burning on you. If you have proficiency in such a check or saving throw, your proficiency bonus is doubled for these purposes.
  • You need not eat, drink, or breathe.
  • You are considered to be an elemental whenever it is detrimental for you.

Skate. If you move across a flat, horizontal surface that has no difficult terrain, your walking speed increases by 10 feet. You ignore difficult terrain made of snow or ice. In addition, you can move across water (or any liquid that freezes like water) at half your skate speed, leaving a frozen trail behind you too thin for others to use.

Speak with Ice. As part of a short rest, you can enter a trance to speak to ice. While you do so, you are unconscious. Ice within 30 feet of you imparts impressions of what has happened near it, along with anything frozen within or concealed by the ice within range.

Languages. You speak, read, and write Common and Elemental. Many Ice Elementals also know Glacial.
