Eye Master

Eye masters are giant tentacled floating heads known for a large central eye. They are native to the realm of arcane magic. In the past they were thought to be monsters and villains, but they just have a hard time expressing themselves and are often misunderstood. Most of their bodies are brain, so they are very intelligent. They often lose themselves in their quest for knowledge.

Traits

Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence score increases by 2.

Age. Eye masters age similarly to humans, reaching physical and mental maturity in their late teens and early twenties. While most live under 100 years, it seems that eye masters who accumulate more knowledge and magical expertise can live many centuries longer.

Alignment. Their appearance leads many to consider eye masters evil, but they are mostly lawful neutral, doing what they can to gain access to more knowledge. Usually working with others is a better way to meet this goal.

Rarity. Rare. It would be more likely to run into an eye master in an academic setting than an adventuring one.

Size. An eye master’s head is about 5 to 6 feet tall. Though they float and are hard to weigh, an eye master’s mass is around 100 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 5 feet. You have a flying speed of 20 feet, but you can fly no more than 3 feet above the ground. If the ground is ever farther away than that, such as when a pit opens underneath you, you fall.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness within the same range as if it were dim light. Absent even dim light, this vision is monochromatic.

Arcanist. You have an innate understanding of magic, and so you have proficiency in the Arcana skill.

Eye-Master Magic. You know the shocking grasp cantrip. Staring at 5th level, you can cast levitate, targeting only yourself and without using material components. You regain the ability to cast this spell when you finish a short or long rest. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Six Tentacles. You have six grasping tentacles, and so you can hold a corresponding number of items at the ready. Also, creatures one size larger than you don’t automatically succeed on checks to escape your grapple. Although your extra limbs allow you to wield more weapons, they don’t allow you to make more attacks than you might while wielding only two weapons.

Slow Fall. You have resistance to damage from falling.

Languages. You speak, read, and write Common.
