Kasa-obake are yokai, a type of spirit, who have manifested in discarded umbrellas. Each has one eye, one leg, and a prehensile tongue. They enjoy causing mischief and telling jokes to avoid opening up about their true feelings.

A yokai is a spirit that manifested from a material object or physical creature. Kasaobake or the chicken homes of the Yaga witch clan are yokai. Yokai are commonly referred to as tsukumogami. A kami is a spirit being that manifested on the Spirit Plane and traveled to the Mortal Plane, though it may appear to be made of physical objects.


Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Age. Kasa-obake animate as adults. They don’t age.

Alignment. Kasa-obake are whimsical tricksters, out for personal fun with little concern for rules and strictures. They are also lighthearted and gentle. They are typically chaotic good.

Rarity. Rare. Yokai rarely emerge from the realm of spirits. When they do, the kasa-obake is only one material form they might take.

Size. Made of an animate umbrella, a kasa-obake is about 3 feet tall. Your size is Small.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 25 feet.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness within the same range as if it were dim light. Absent even dim light, this vision is monochromatic.

Float. When you fall, you can slow your fall to 60 feet per round, taking no damage from falling. For every 10 feet you fall, you can move 5 feet horizontally. Each foot you move horizontally this way counts as 1 foot of movement.

Heritage (Celestial). You are a humanoid, but you are considered to be a celestial whenever it is detrimental for you.

Living Construct. You are a humanoid, but your constructed nature gives you the following traits.

  • You are immune to disease and have resistance to poison damage. Also, you can add your proficiency bonus to saving throws against being poisoned. If you have proficiency in such a saving throw, your proficiency bonus is doubled against being poisoned.
  • You need not eat, drink, or breathe.
  • You need not sleep, and don’t suffer the effects of exhaustion from lack of rest. Magic can’t put you to sleep.
  • During a long rest, which you still need, you remain conscious and aware.

One Leg. Creatures have advantage on Strength checks they make to shove you.

Prehensile Tongue. You can use your tongue as a grasping limb. Although this extra limb might allow you to wield three weapons, it doesn’t allow you to make more attacks than you might while wielding only two weapons. In addition, while using your tongue as a limb, you can’t speak clearly, making verbal spell components impossible.

Jumper. You can open and close the umbrella portion of your body to double the distance you jump.

Languages. You speak, read, and write Common and the Yokami dialect of Ethereal.
