Monkeyfolk

Monkeyfolk come from an advanced civilization of monkeys on Monkey Island. They consider most other cultures to be barbaric and frightening. Despite their resemblance to monkeys, monkeyfolk are highly scientific and those that learn the Common tongue often venture beyond the island to learn about other cultures. A monkeyfolk is an excellent, if somewhat unconventional (for Faerie), ally to have.

Monkeyfolk find hairless humanoids disgusting and frightening. There are rumors that they were related to humans, a thought they find so revolting that some find revolting. Much of this xenophobia revolves around language. Monkeyfolk do not speak the Common tongue shared by many of Faerie, which makes them disconnected from the wider world. After woggle-bugs, monkeyfolk are perhaps the most scientific-minded in Faerie. They have gunpowder-level technology, a standing military, and aren’t afraid to use it as the situation demands. That said, they come from a highly xenophobic country where intruders are treated like animals. It is entirely possible that gunpowder technology actually originated on Monkey Isle and was stolen by the inventors of Phreex. Many of the same inventions are found on both islands.

Traits

  • Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2 and your Intelligence increases by 1.
  • Age. Monkeyfolk mature faster than humans, reaching adulthood around age 12. They age noticeably faster, and though few monkeyfolk live to old age, the most cautious rarely live longer than 50 years.
  • Agile Climber. You have a climbing speed of 25 feet. You can’t use your climbing speed while you wear medium or heavy armor. (If your campaign uses the variant rule for encumbrance, you can’t use your climbing speed if you are encumbered.)
  • Alignment. Most monkeyfolk are lawful, considering Faerie to be a bizarre and somewhat frightening, chaotic universe.
  • Harquebusier. You have proficiency in firearms and ignore the loading property of these weapons.
  • Languages. You can speak, read, and write Monkeyfolk.
  • Prehensile Tail. You can grasp things with your tail. It has a reach of 5 feet, and it can lift a number of pounds equal to five times your Strength score. You can use it to do the following simple tasks: lift, drop, hold, push, or pull an object or a creature; open or close a door or a container; grapple someone; or make an unarmed strike. Your DM might allow other simple tasks to be added to that list of options. Your tail can’t wield weapons or shields or do anything that requires manual precision, such as using tools or magic items or performing the somatic components of a spell.
  • Size. Monkeyfolk average about 3 feet tall and weigh about 40 pounds. Your size is Small.
  • Speed. Your base walking speed is 25 feet.
