Painbringer

Painbringers are the torturers of Hell, who predate the demons and devils. They live in perpetual agony, covered in wounds and injuries. Some say they torture evil souls to rehabilitate them so they can go to Heaven.

Traits

Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Age. Painbringers are all adults and are ageless.

Alignment. Painbringers methodically torture the souls they find in Hell with both physical and emotional pain. However, they are lawful good in the context of the celestial plan.

Rarity. Mythical.

Size. Painbringers resemble humans in weight and height. Your size is Medium.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness within the same range as if it were dim light. Absent even dim light, this vision is monochromatic.

Devilish Resilience. You have resistance to fire damage and poison damage. In addition, you can add your proficiency bonus to saving throws against fire and being poisoned. You do the same for any ability check or saving throw to extinguish fire burning on you. If you have proficiency in such a check or saving throw, your proficiency bonus is doubled for these purposes.

Heritage (Aberration, Fiend). You are humanoid, but you are considered to be an aberration and a fiend whenever it is detrimental for you.

Macabre Visage. You have proficiency in the Intimidation skill.

Soul Sense. You can cast detect evil and good at will, but each casting lasts only until the end of your next turn. This version of the spell can detect any creature that has an alignment of evil or good. However, the spell identifies a creature’s type only if that type is aberration, celestial, elemental, fey, fiend, or undead. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for this spell.

Sense Desire and Sin. You can use your action to understand the general nature of the sins and desires of a creature you can see within 30 feet of you. For example, you could tell someone’s soul is stained by gluttony, lust, or wrath, but not know what sins they have committed. Or, you could tell someone’s soul longs for love, wealth, or power, but not know how or why they would wish to manifest that desire.

Languages. You speak, read, and write Common, Infernal, and Shadowtongue.
