Thoatan are the children of cosmic deities who have become fantastically and grotesquely cruel. They rule the realm of Horrorland and punish children they believe to be naughty or impolite. They say they want to teach people lessons, but the mental scars of those lessons surely outweigh any benefit. They can sing and breathe music through their throat gills.

Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.

Age. Little is known of the thoatan. Many are coy with those seeking answers, but they are most likely unsure of their origins or their parent pantheon. All thoatan encountered are adults and, based on historical study, seemingly immortal. Alternatively, time in their Horrorland is out of sync with the other realms.

Alignment. Thoatan live to visit horror and pain on others as part of a game whose rules are known only to them. They are lawful evil.

Rarity. Unknown.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Masochist. You have resistance to piercing and slashing damage.

Life of the Party. You can speak through your gills and affect others when doing so. You have proficiency in Persuasion and Performance (singing).

Sense Insecurities. You attempt to beguile a target humanoid that you can see within a range of 60 feet. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your Charisma modifier + your proficiency bonus) or be charmed for up to 1 minute or until your concentration is broken. While the target is charmed, you have a telepathic link with it as long as the two of you are on the same plane of existence. You can use this telepathic link to learn the target’s greatest fears and insecurities. These are conveyed in a series of cryptic and poetic images that you might not fully understand.

Thoatan Gills. You can breathe air and water. You need not breathe if you can hear music.

Traumacidal. You enjoy causing pain and discomfort with your words. You know the vicious mockery cantrip. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for it.

Languages. You speak, read, and write Common, Astral, and Gutteral.
