Vata

Vata were originally the offspring of vatazin and human parents, and they survived a genocide by sheltering among their human kin. Over the centuries, the long-lived vata have become fewer, but traces of their blood are found in all human lands. Unsuspecting humans sometimes have a vata child. For most communities, this is considered a blessing.

Vata possess some portion of the innate arcane power of their ancestors. They can all perform small acts of magic, and many vata are drawn to delve deeper into this potential, becoming skilled spellcasters. Of course, the arcane potential of vata as children, combined with their appearance, can sometimes lead to suspicion and misunderstanding. Vata tend to be empathetic and aware of their surroundings. Almost always brought up as outsiders wherever they lived, they learn to bridge gaps and to communicate, and their slightly otherworldly nature tends to draw people to them, often in spite of themselves. Vata are natural leaders, diplomats, and counselors.

The Vata once had cities and lands of their own, but the glory of the vata’s ancestors is long since faded into myth and legend. The vata dwell almost entirely alongside other people, particularly humans. Because the potential of their bloodline can sometime skip generations, a vata may be born into a human family, the only one of their kind in a small town or village. Some vata, already feeling separate from the place and people of their birth, choose to travel, experiencing what the world has to offer and looking for the place where they belong.

Names

As vata are now born almost solely into human families and cultures, they usually receive names from those cultures. See Cultures, following for details and ideas. Some vata have been known to take new names, particularly dropping their surname, if they feel estranged from their family or culture of birth.
