It is said that if a horse should step on a wolf’s paw track, it will be crippled. With this spell, the wolf’s tracks are actually traps.

While you cast this spell, five feet of a canine’s tracks become a magical trap. The trap appears to be normally tracks and requires a successful Wisdom (Survival) check against your spell save DC to be recognized as a trap. The trap triggers when a Small creature or larger steps on the tracks protected by the spell. The triggering creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 1d4 piercing damage and stop moving. Thereafter, until the creature breaks free of the trap it is restrained. A creature can use its action to make a Strength saving throw, with disadvantage at the end of each of its turns and ends the restrained effect on a success. Each failed check deals 1 piercing damage to the trapped creature. Alternatively, another creature that can reach the restrained creature can use an action to make an Intelligence (Arcana) check against your spell save DC. On a success, the restrained effect also ends.
