Fire Snake

5th-level evocation

Casting Time:1 action

Range:60 feet

Components:V, S

Duration:Instantaneous

Classes: druid, sorcerer, warlock, wizard

You unleash a sinuous line of fire 5 wide and 60 feet long.

You can shape this line in any way you choose so long as it makes a continuous path. It can follow the ground or extend into the air. Creatures in the line must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 10d6 fire damage, or half as much on a successful save.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 6th level or higher, a creature failing its Dexterity save is grappled until the beginning of its next turn, at which point it can attempt a new Dexterity save to escape the grip of the fire snake. If failed, the target takes an additional 1d6 fire damage for each slot level above 5th and remains grappled until the beginning of its next turn. A creature can substitute a Strength (Athletics) check in place of a Dexterity save to escape this grapple.
