Orb of Flame

4th-level evocation

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: 60 feet

Components: V, S

Duration: Instantaneous

Classes: sorcerer, wizard

You create a searing ball of yellow-white flames half a foot in diameter. You can hurl the orb of flame at a creature within range as a ranged spell attack. If you hit, the target takes 8d6 fire damage, or half as much on a successful Dexterity saving throw. In addition, if the creature failing its save is wielding a metal weapon, it becomes red hot and the target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or drop the weapon. If this Constitution saving throw succeeds, the creature can retain its grip but takes an additional 1d6 fire damage at the end of its turn and has disadvantage on attack rolls with that weapon. After 1 round, the weapon returns to normal.

Creatures within 5 feet of the target take 4d6 fire damage, or half as much on a successful Dexterity saving throw.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the damage increases by 2d6 for each slot level above 4th.
