You reach out with grasping tendrils of necrotic energy that plunge into the chest of living creatures you designate and having them crawl into the hearts of creatures in a 20-foot cube. All creatures must succeed a Constitution saving throw or take 8d6 necrotic damage. Living creatures that do not have hearts, such as elementals, oozes, plants, and many types of aberrations, are unaffected by this spell. A creature that fails its saving throw gains 1 level of exhaustion. A creature cannot surpass 2 levels of exhaustion because of this spell.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a 5th level spell slot or higher, the damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 4th.
