Shadow Cleave

Necromancy cantrip

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: Self (5 feet)

Components: S, M (a melee weapon worth at least 10 cp that lacks the two-handed property)

Duration: Instantaneous

Classes: cleric, sorcerer, warlock, wizard

You form a weapon of eldritch shadow that overlays the weapon you used to cast this spell as it hungrily seeks to smite your enemies. Make a melee spell attack against a target within 5 feet of you. If you wish, you can replace your spellcasting ability modifier for this spell attack with your choice of your Strength or Dexterity modifier.

On a hit, the attack inflicts necrotic damage equal to 1d8 + the ability modifier you used in the attack roll (instead of the weapon’s normal damage), and the weapon lashes out, elongating to strike one other creature of your choice within 5 feet of the target. That other creature takes necrotic damage equal to your proficiency bonus. If this spell reduced the main target to 0 hit points, you can add your spellcasting ability modifier to your damage against the other creature.

The necrotic damage to both the main target and the other creature increases when you reach certain levels.

At 5th level, you increase both by an additional 1d8. At 11th level, you increase both by 2d8. At 17th level, you increase both by 3d8.
