When a creature you can see is about to make a melee attack against a creature other than you, you can force it to waver and hesitate rather than striking. If the target fails a Wisdom saving throw, it cannot follow through on its attack (or any attacks that would be made as part of the same action, such as by a creature with Multiattack), wasting that action entirely. If the target succeeds on its saving throw, it can follow through on its attack, but it has disadvantage on its attack roll(s) and the target has resistance against any damage dealt to it by that creature on its turn. In addition to the immediate effects of stay the hand described above, as long as you continue to concentrate the takes a -2 penalty on attack and damage rolls against the creature it was targeting when you cast the spell if it failed its initial save, or a -1 penalty on a successful one.
