Suffocation

5th-level necromancy

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: 30 feet

Components: V, S, M (a class vial containing a bit of your breath)

Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

Classes: sorcerer, warlock, wizard

You extract the air from the target’s lungs, as if it had run out of breath and begun suffocating. The target must make a Constitution saving throw. On a success, it is able to gasp for breath and has disadvantage on ability checks for 1 round and then the spell’s effects end. A creature failing the save is out of breath and cannot speak, take a breath, or hold its breath and gains 1 level of exhaustion. Each round, it must make another Constitution saving throw as it struggles to breathe, gaining another level of exhaustion on a failure. After a number of rounds equal to its Constitution modifier, it drops to 0 hit points at the start of its next turn and is dying, unable to regain hit points or be stabilized until it can breathe again. A creature reaching 6 levels of exhaustion dies immediately. Suffocation only affects living creatures that must breathe air. Amorphous creatures like elementals and oozes are immune.

At Higher Levels. If you cast suffocation with a 9th-level slot, you can target up to 10 creatures within range.
