Warp Metal

4th-level transmutation

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: 30 feet

Components: V, S, M (a twisted wire)

Duration: Instantaneous

Class(es): cleric, paladin, sorcerer, wizard

You bend and warp up to 10 small metal objects within range, causing it to be deformed and weakened. Each item must be about the size of a shield, breastplate, chain shirt, or one-handed weapon. You can affect a single larger item, such as a two-handed weapon or full suit of armor, as if it were two small objects. You can affect an object up to a 10-foot cube as if it were five small objects, or a single object up to a 15-foot cube as if it were 10 objects.

A creature wearing or wielding an item you attempt to warp can attempt a Constitution saving throw to prevent the spell from affecting their items, with a separate save required for each item. The effects of being warped depend on the type of item:

  • Ranged weapons like crossbows or firearms are ruined. • Melee weapons have disadvantage on attack rolls, and on a natural 1 on any attack roll the wielder must make a Constitution saving throw against the spell’s save DC or the weapon becomes broken, dealing only half damage. • Shields lose 1 point of their AC bonus.
  • Light armor loses 1 point of AC
  • Medium armor loses 1 point of AC and its maximum Dexmodifier is reduced to 1. It also grants disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks.
  • Heavy armor loses 1 point of AC and slows the wearer’s speed by 10 feet regardless of their Strength score.
  • Other items require GM adjudication, such as the following: Warping door hinges or handles could provide advantage (if sprung open) or disadvantage (if jammed shut) on Strength (Athletics) checks made to force the door open or Dexterity (thieves’ tools) checks to open a lock. Vehicle wheels or axles fall apart, causing the vehicle to grind to a halt. Prison bars split and deform, allowing easy escape. Instead of warping items, you could use warp metal to reverse the effect of this spell. Warped items cannot be repaired with mending but a fabricate spell can restore them to their former shape. You bend and warp up to 10 small metal objects within range, causing it to be deformed and weakened. A creature wearing or wielding an item you attempt to warp can attempt a Constitution saving throw to prevent the spell from (affecting that item?)
