Warp Sound

3rd-level illusion

Casting Time:1 action

Components:V, S

Range:30 ft.

Duration:1 hour

Classes: bard

You can change the sounds that up to 4 creatures or objects make. You can create sounds where none exist, deaden the sounds creatures or objects make, or transform sounds into other sounds. All affected creatures or objects must have their sounds warped in the same way, and you cannot change the effect once it is created. You can change the qualities of sounds, making them higher or lower in pitch or volume, and the sounds can be musical, whimsical, eerie, or anything you can imagine. You can muffle the sound of doors opening or silence alarm bells or cause loud speech or the sound of running footsteps to come from several locations at once. You cannot create speech in languages you don’t know.

When targeting creatures, you can create one of the following effects, or effects of similar power subject to GM approval. Unwilling creatures can negate the effect on themselves with a successful Charisma saving throw.

  • Embarrassing Sounds: The targets’ words and actions are accompanied with crude and obnoxious sound effects, granting disadvantage on Charisma (Deception), Charisma (Intimidation), and Charisma (Persuasion) checks.
  • Frightening Noise: Sharp and strident scare chords and eerie moans grant the target’s advantage on Charisma (Intimidation) checks.
  • Garbled Speech: You distort the targets’ speech with overlapping babble. Other creatures must succeed on an Intelligence saving throw against the spell’s DC or they do not understand what the target is saying. This does not interfere with spellcasting but may ruin the effect of spells requiring verbal communication.
  • Noisy Steps: Loud sounds make targets’ movement obvious. They have disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks and when invisible creatures can always tell which square they are in.
  • Quiet: Targets gain advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks as long as they are not clearly visible.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you can target two additional creatures or objects for each slot level above 3rd. In addition, you may choose to affect only half the normal number of creatures or objects and manipulate the sound differently for each target, rather than affecting all targets in the same way.
