Vaettir are faerie spirits tied to the land itself. They are hidden, dangerous, and not to be casually crossed. And yet they can be appeased by respecting their boundaries and traditions. Different vaettir live in different regions and it is the wise traveler who checks for signs of their presence before trespassing.
