Myrmidon

The myrmidons were originally worker ants. Aeacus, a son of Zeus, and his mother were the only survivors of a plague that wiped out the population of Aegina. When Aeacus saw that ants were unaffected by the plague, he prayed to Zeus for a means of repopulating the island with people who were “as hardy as the worker ants.” Aeacus got his wish. Zeus transformed the ants into humans, both fierce warriors and loyal subjects.

A Little Off

A typical myrmidon appears as a normal human but exhibits unnerving behavior. Given their unusual heritage, myrmidons all look the same, with dark features, olive complexions, and coal-black eyes.

Myrmidons blink too slow, speak in strange rhythms, and work in perfect unison. They tend to be followers instead of leaders and are not eager to venture opinions unless they feel it is shared by their comrades. They work well in a group but are less sure of themselves when alone.

Peerless Warriors

Myrmidons are greatly desired by war chieftains and kings, as their organization and loyalty are unparalleled. They work well in groups and are excellent hoplites, as the tactics lend well to their sense of organized warfare.

Myrmidons adventure in entire groups. They hire out their services to powerful warlords. Their legendary discipline makes them excellent recruits for military groups. They excel at leading other myrmidons but have difficulty with less organized (i.e., everybody else) troops.

Myrmidons worship Zeus, their progenitor.

Master Excavators

Myrmidons form small, independent kingdoms, led by a king. Socially, Myrmidons live in communal harmony— everyone knows their place and what is expected of him or her. Myrmidons excavate the earth in the way ants do, by spreading the soil over the rocks in order to have some ground to till. They also live in the dugouts, refraining from the use of soil for making bricks. Myrmidons are known in Aegina, Epirus and Thessaly.
