Pixies are small fey creatures with beautiful wings that can resemble those of butterflies, dragons, and more. Most pixies have a humanoid appearance, looking like small halflings or gnomes, but some pixies have the physical features of insects, like compound eyes or small mandibles. These pixies are called The Attuned and are believed to have a stronger connection to nature and primal magic than other pixies.

Pixie Dust

The wings of a pixie generate small amounts of a magical substance called pixie dust. A common myth is that this dust grants pixies the power to fly. While pixies can fly without the aid of pixie dust, one of its magical properties bestows short-lived flight on other creatures.

Pixies can create different kinds of pixie dust, each with different magical effects. However, the amount of dust required to create these effects is substantial, and most pixies can only produce a limited amount per day.

Hidden Homes

Pixies are sought after by unscrupulous mages for their pixie dust. Because of this, pixies have very well-hidden homes, often leveraging their flying abilities to stay out of reach.

Pixie fables often involve a young pixie being captured or imprisoned due to their own careless actions, before outsmarting their captor and escaping. Remaining safe and free is vitally important to pixies, as they are always under threat of exploitation.

Dust Devils

There is a group of pixies called the Dust Devils that punish anyone that trades in pixie dust or imprisons a pixie. Most legitimate merchants want nothing to do with pixie dust, as the threat of the Dust Devils is too great. If the Dust Devils come for you, you’re either dead or wishing you were.

Minor Features

Choose two of the following minor features.

  • Fluent. You can speak, read, and write two additional languages of your choice.
  • Nature Magic. You know the druidcraft cantrip.
  • Pixie Dust. Each day you can generate magical pixie dust from your wings. You can generate one dose of pixie dust after a long rest. Pixie dust lasts for 24 hours before losing its magical properties. Pixie dust can be stored in a vial or pouch and used as an action by any creature, or shaken directly from the wings as an action on a creature within the pixie’s reach. When pixie dust is sprinkled on a creature, they gain one of the following effects, determined when the pixie dust was created. A pixie can sprinkle pixie dust on themselves.
    • Flight. The creature gains a fly speed of 10 feet for 1 minute.
    • Invisible. The creature becomes invisible. The invisibility lasts until the end of the next turn of the creature that activated it. A creature invisible from this effect can use their action to maintain the invisibility for another round, for up to 1 minute. The invisibility ends if the invisible creature makes an attack, deals damage, or forces a creature to make a saving throw.
    • Reveal. An invisible creature becomes visible and unable to become invisible for 1 minute.
  • Quiet Steps. You have proficiency in the Stealth skill.
  • Shimmer Field. When you Dash or Dodge, until the end of your next turn, you become lightly obscured and opportunity attacks against you have disadvantage.
  • Trained Tools. You have proficiency in two tools of your choice.
  • Very Small. You can move through the space of any creature that is of a size larger than yours. You can’t end your turn in another creature’s space.

Pixie Size

Pixies are normally presented as Tiny creatures. 5e makes a number of assumptions about player characters, and one of them is that a player character’s size is either Small or Medium. Characters that are outside of these sizes run into complications that can slow down the game or make it less enjoyable.

In order to make the game simpler for everyone involved, we’ve given pixies a Small size. This way, you don’t have to worry about finding weapons and armor specifically sized for pixies, and they can use all of the weapon types that a Small creature normally can.
