Stonekin (Oread)

The stonekin are tied to the power of elemental earth. Their bodies have the colorations of different kinds of rock and stone, sometimes with veins of bright colors. They call themselves the oread, but outsiders commonly know them as the stonekin.

Stone Body

A stonekin’s body has a stone-like appearance. It is hard and angular, with some stonekin having smooth slate-like bodies, while others have more bumpy or craggy hides.

Stonekin are hairless, but rocky deposits or growths on their body can be shaped into forms that look like hair.

World Beneath

Stonekin communities are exclusively built underground. They prefer to build around existing features, like caves and chasms, instead of building from scratch. Everything the stonekin need to survive can be found underground, so they rarely need to venture to the surface. Most stonekin have never been above ground.

Shaped Earth

The elemental heritage of stonekin grant them the ability to reshape the earth. Instead of building structures or weapons from different pieces, stonekin prefer to reshape their environment into a new, solid shape. Stonekin homes are often seamless, a telltale sign of stone shaping.

Stonekin communities are notoriously hard to attack. At a moment’s notice, elite guards can wall off the tunnels that lead to their home and open up hidden escape routes. Attackers can find themselves cut off from the city or even trapped between fresh walls of stone.

Major Features

Choose two of the following major features. You can exchange one major feature for two additional minor features.

  • Earth Magic (Magic). You know the mold earth cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the earth tremor spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the earthen grasp spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. You don’t require material components for these spells. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
  • Earthen Slam. As an action, you can strike the ground with enough force to cause staggering vibrations. Every creature on the ground within 5 feet of you must make a Dexterity saving throw. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Strength modifier + your proficiency bonus. On a failed save, a creature falls prone and has disadvantage on attack rolls until the end of their next turn. The radius of this ability increases to 10 feet at 11th level. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
  • Immovable Stone. The longer you remain in place, the more like stone you become. At the start of your turn, if you haven’t moved from your current space since the start of your last turn, you grow heavier and sturdier. You reduce any bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage you take by 1, to a minimum of 1, as long as you don’t move from that position. Every turn you meet the criteria, the amount of damage reduced increased by 1, to a maximum of your Constitution modifier (minimum of 1). Once you move, the benefits are immediately lost. This damage reduction applies before resistances and immunities.
  • Tremorsense. You can detect and pinpoint the origin of vibrations within 10 feet of you, provided that you and the source of the vibrations are in contact with the same ground or substance. You can’t detect flying or incorporeal creatures with this sense.
